IFoA news: Dr Patrick Poon supports IFoA Foundation and Thought Leadership series
Business leader and philanthropist Dr Patrick Sun Cheong Poon has
donated £500,000 to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). Dr Poon has
had a career spanning over 40 years in the insurance industry in China and
South-East Asia. In 1975, he became one of the earliest Chinese-born citizens
to become a Fellow of the IFoA.
As a result of Dr Poon’s generosity, the IFoA Foundation will be setting
up a £500,000 China and South-East Asia scholarship fund to provide bursaries
for actuarial students across both regions, as well as enabling the IFoA’s
inaugural Thought Leadership programme and the Presidential Speaker Series to
achieve a wider reach.
Every year, five actuarial graduates from Mahidol University will be
eligible for the Scholarship if they meet the selection criteria. The
Scholarship is currently worth over THB38,000 per winner. The IFoA welcomes
accreditation applications from other universities in Thailand.
The IFoA would also like to welcome all SOAT members to participate in
the new IFoA Thought Leadership programme which seeks to re-position actuaries
at the centre of key societal debates. This multi-day series of three keynote
webinars, individually presented by leading economist John Kay, Sir Paul
Collier (Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of
Government), Ashok Gupta (Chair at Mercer Ltd), and Nico Aspinall (Chief
Investment Officer at B&CE), will open up discussion on these essential
topics. The series will culminate in a panel session with Chief Economist of
the Bank of England, Andy Haldane. For further details and to register your
free place, please visit the event
